Polls are open in special elections to fill the vacant US House of Representatives seats in Florida. Polls close at 19:00 ET 00:00 BST in Florida's 6th district and at 20:00 ET 01:00 BST in Florida's 1st district, with results expected soon after. Should the GOP win both Florida races, House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) majority will increase to 220-213, giving Republicans a four-vote buffer.
- Wisconsin will also vote in a state Supreme Court race that has morphed into a referendum on Elon Musk's influence after he spent millions boosting conservative candidate Brad Schimel. Results expected tomorrow morning.
- While the GOP is expected to retain both Florida seats, the race for NSA Mike Waltz’s former seat is tighter than anticipated, with Democrat Josh Weil dramatically outraising Republican Randy Fine on the back of a strong campaign.
- Punchbowl notes: “...anything less than a 20-point victory should raise alarm bells in GOP leadership ranks...”
- Politico writes that there are three broadly plausible scenarios: "First, the GOP wins these races easily, leaving Trump’s teflon coating unscratched.... Second is a relative Democratic overperformance in special elections that... does little to change the national political calculus... Third... a huge overperformance that becomes the first real flashing red light in Trump’s second term... Trump and his allies seem increasingly concerned about door number three."
