The election of former BoC and BoE governor Mark Carney as leader of the governing centre-left Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) on 9 March comes with the party recording some of its strongest opinion polling in years as the escalating trade war and political hostilities with the US sparks a 'rally round the flag' effect that has seen backing for the LPC soar in recent weeks. In the latest EKOS opinion poll the LPC leads the main opposition centre-right Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) with 40.7% support to 35.5%. This 5.2% lead is the largest in an EKOS poll since September 2021.

The Aussie 10-yr futures contract continues to trade below the Dec 11 high of 95.851. A stronger bearish theme would expose 95.275, the Nov 14 low and a key support. Clearance of this level would strengthen a bearish theme. For bulls, a confirmed reversal and a breach of 95.851, the Dec 11 high, would instead reinstate a bull cycle and refocus attention on resistance at 96.207, a Fibonacci retracement point.
