Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday said Canada will retaliate against fresh U.S. tariffs on autos and said the relationship between two of the world's largest trade partners is now permanently damaged.

Carney didn't specify what form the trade retaliation will take. In the past he's backed dollar-for-dollar counter tariffs and said other measures could be used. President Donald Trump's office reached out last night to set up a call that will happen within the next few days, Carney said, stressing that even if there's a broad renegotiation of trade ties Canada must seek out other partners.

“It is clear that the United States is no longer a reliable partner,” Carney said. “The old relationship” between Canada and the U.S. “is over,” Carney said. (See: MNI: Canada Will Struggle To Wean Off U.S. Trade Dependence)
