The UK government is undergoing an independent review to consider how Greenhouse Gas Removals (GGRs) can assist the UK in meeting the net zero targets by 2050, it said.
- The GGRs technologies includes large-scale Power Bio-energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) and Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS).
- The approaches to transitioning away from public investment and attracting private investment through carbon markets will be examined.
- The integration of GGRs into the UK ETS is under government consideration, following the completion of the consultation in August 2024.
- Scale of emissions savings, barriers to deployment and regulatory frameworks will also be examined to ensure they effectively support investment and innovation in GGR technologies.
- The review and recommendations will be published in October 2025.
