Egypt’s switch to net importer status could become a structural shift for the country, as Egypt looks to feed domestic demand requirements amid lower production and increased consumption, Platts said.
- Egypt has imported 870k mt of LNG across 2024, with net imports starting in June.
- Prior to this, the country had maintained a net export position since July 2023, having exported 1.18m mt across July 2023 to June 2024.
- Egypt has not shipped any LNG cargoes since May. In 2024-to-date it has exported 570k mt of LNG, compared to 2.82m mt over the same period in 2023.
- Egypt’s Hoegh Galleon FSRU has received 800k mt of LNG from 12 cargoes so since arriving in June. 80% have come from the USA.
- Sources told Platts that Egypt could seek another 15-20 cargoes in preparation for winter.
