Rep Filemon Vela Jr (D-TX) has announced that he will be leaving Congress within the next few weeks.

• Vela announced last year that he wouldn't seek reelection in 2022 but has taken a job in the private sector and hastened his exit from Congress.
• Vela's early retirement will further shrink the Democrats' thin majority in the House ahead of a push to legislate a number of high priority items of the Democrat agenda on climate and social spending.
• House retirements during a midterm year are often considered a bellwether for party confidence and the running tally for House Democrat retirements stands at 31.
• There is likely to be a special election for Texas Congressional District 34 with the winner to serve a short time before the general election in November.
